Petzl Tikka

petzl tikka head torch reviewThis Petzl Tikka is a simple and compact offering and has been my go-to head torch of choice for a while; perfect for campsite use and proximity tasks like putting up your tent and cooking dinner.

The Petzl Tikka comes with two lighting modes, one for preserving battery life and one for brightness- 100 lumens (more than the Tikkina). This is more than adequate for general camping activities, but not suitable for more rigorous usage. With no strobe or red light, the Tikka has only the basic lighting features. Handily however, it glows in the dark to make scrabbling for your head torch in the middle of the night that little bit easier.

The single push button cycles through the two lighting modes and is still usable when wearing thick gloves- even with numb fingers. The head is adjustable and the band is wide enough to make it comfortable for long stretches of time. It can also be washed, something you may well be thankful for! Although rated water resistant, mine has survived countless rain showers and even the odd unfortunate dunking.

Weighing in at 85g the Petzl Tikka is a lightweight option, optimised for ease of use. It uses 3x AAA batteries located at the front of the device but still doesn’t feel unbalanced. This is especially important for activities- there’s nothing worse than a head torch sliding down your face whenever you move. The burn time lasts between 120 and 180 hours, which is great. As with most Petzl head torches, the Tikka is also compatible with rechargeable batteries should you wish to upgrade.

Overall, the Petzl Tikka is a great device- perfect for camping activities, where ease of use is key. This is the head torch for people that want better brightness and burn time than the Tikkina, while still being a good value device with basic features.

  1. I’ve been using my Tikka on camping holidays for years, it does the job well! Good lighting for those fiddly tasks. Couldn’t agree more.
